Adornos-Hombre de genjibre

Recipe for No-Bake Gingerbread Decorations

1/2 c. applesauce
1/2 c. cinnamon
2 T. white school glue

Combine ingredients until they form a consistent dough. Flatten the dough between two pieces of waxed paper. Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes from the dough. Use a straw to cut a small hole near the top so that you can thread yarn or ribbon through as a hanger. Allow 2-3 days for the dough to air-dry. Decorate as desired when the "cookies" are firm.

App Update

Google Translate for iPods blows the other translating apps I mentioned before OUT OF THE WATER. It is more intuitive and can vocalize its translations. Furthermore, you can choose from many different languages, in addition to Spanish.

If you have an iPhone or an iPod with a microphone, you can even speak into it and it will type for you. (I've noticed that it doesn't understand "kid" very well and the translation is spotty if you are a grown-up singing "Kung-Fu Fighting.")

Recommendations for Family Study

Recently, I have had several people ask for input on what they could do to learn more Spanish at home. It makes sense to me to collect these recommendations in one place.

1. ROSETTA STONE?
I am often asked what I think of this software. I have not used it, but have spoken with other language teachers who are familiar with it. They tell me that it is heavily focused on drilling vocabulary and structures (the common way that languages were taught prior to the 90's.) This type of learning requires a great deal of memory work and self-motivation. The software costs around $500. At that price, I would not recommend it! If you are willing to take this learning approach, you can go to any bookstore and find CD sets in the foreign language section that accomplish the same thing for about $40.

2. iPods or iPads
In class, we are exploring various apps that are available on iTunes in the education apps section. There is a wide selection of varied usefulness. You just need to explore!
Try:
24/7 Tutor
Verbos en espanol
Spanish Flashcards Lite
Spanish Kids' Vocab
iTranslate

Some require an internet connection to work. I suggest you try out these free "lite" versions and decide if you would like to invest in the full versions. So far, I haven't found any that I wanted the full version of, though. If you happen upon an app that you would recommend, please let me know!

3. Podcuentos del Profe
Juan Tejeda, a Spanish and French teacher, has published some of his TPR Stories as podcasts. I find them useful and entertaining. Search on the name in YouTube to locate them.

4. Other podcasts
There are other Spanish learning podcasts available, as well. Search on iTunes!

I'll add ideas as they come up and you are invited to share resources with us here. Simply comment on this post!

The opening photo is, I believe, a photograph of a painting. My source for the digital image was http://www.myspace.com/valentinatomita

In my haste, I neglected to record the sources for two other photos that I found on Flickr, the "light" and the "Aztec Gods." I apologize and will do better on my next movie effort!
